Recall is uninstallable, Microsoft says

Multiple online sources report that Microsoft claims Recall to be an opt-in experience and you can remove it. I cannot find any direct article from Microsoft itself, but there are others confirming it with direct references to Microsoft spokepeople.

I have my doubts that this will age well, and that’s why I’m posting this here. In a typical Microsoft move we will first see it slowly creeping into Windows, then users will be nudged into enabling it until enough are accustomed to it and then they will remove the option to opt-out. If we’re lucky we get a checkbox that will disable it, with no guarantee that the next Windows Update will not accidentally enable it for you. The internet is full of examples of this behaviour, especially around OneDrive. Similar to forced telemetry this is going to be yet another privacy-disregarding move from a company that thinks they know better.

Let’s not forget that Recall is a privacy nightmare by design, and there is little what even Microsoft can do about it. This will fall down on the feet of many users with or without their knowledge.

November 1, we are in the “pretend that the user has a choice”-phase of the Recall feature. This will not last.
